A man who died in a hit-and-run incident in Long Beach Thursday night may have been a security guard who was trying to stop a crime, authorities said.

Officers responded to a call about a crash involving a pedestrian near Anaheim Street and Magnolia Avenue around 10:30 p.m., Long Beach police Lt. Shaleana Benson said.

A witness reported seeing a man hanging on the hood of a dark-colored SUV, Benson said. The man fell off the vehicle and was hit by a van, according to police.

The drivers of both vehicles fled the scene, Benson said.

According to a preliminary investigation, the victim may have been working as a security guard at a nearby business and was trying to to stop a “crime in progress” prior to the crash.

Detectives were canvassing the area for any video that might have captured the incident.

Officials did not identify the driver and provided no further details about the case.
