Saturday, June 20
More Juneteenth celebrations are expected today across the Bay Area starting with a faith leaders march in San Jose. Below is a list of celebrations planned for today:
- 10 a.m. – San Jose Juneteenth Faith Leaders March
- 11 a.m. – 70th Annual San Francisco Juneteenth celebration
- 2 p.m. – Oakland Mosswood Park Juneteenth Celebration
A Juneteenth celebration is being held in Oakland’s Lake Merritt late Friday afternoon. Earlier in the day, a group gathered for a rally at Oakland City Hall.
An estimated 10,000 people flocked to the Port of Oakland to participate in the “West Coast Port Shutdown.” The Juneteenth rally started with longshore workers at the Port of Oakland holding a work stoppage. The massive group then marched to Oakland City Hall to hear from labor leaders.
In San Francisco, demonstrators gathered in front of San Francisco City Hall for a rally.
Coleman advocates is the group that organized the event. While still celebrating the history of the day, the group wanted to use Juneteenth as a platform for change. Specifically, the group wants to move money from police budgets to programs for children of color, especially as San Francisco Unified School District warns of a possible $80 million budget deficit this fall.
More on the San Francisco rally from NBC Bay Area’s Jackie Ward in the video below.
In the North Bay, a Santa Rosa group went for a more traditional celebration by inviting family, friends and neighbors to come together for a Juneteenth festival. NBC Bay Area’s Christie Smith was there. Watch her coverage here.
