Adding stairs turned out to be harder than building the platform! First we added another foundation board between two trees, three feet lower than the platform. This time we used a fixed foundation, with both ends of the 2 X 6 board attached to trees with lag bolts.   
 

We added spacers, 1 inch diameter, and one inch long, cut from metal pipe, to hold the board away from the trees, allowing for growth.
